I think my generation is the second generation to really grow up with video games. The first generation was GameCube, Nintendo 64, Sega, etc. My generation grew up with a little bit of Nintendo 64, but mostly gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, & a computer or PC.
I think the first generation mostly grew out of gaming once they became an adult. My generation, I feel, grew deeper into gaming as we got older due to the massive growth of technology and introduction to many new games. Because of this many more job opportunities became available to us as we graduated that older generations were not qualified for.
I was watching the news this morning and they were talking about the top careers for our generation.
The top careers are:
- computer technology
- game development
- SEO specialist
- social media strategist
- online marketing specialists
- graphic designers
It amazes me that we grew up with all of these occupations but they are still considered newer to older generations. The benefit is only the younger generations are really qualified for all of these job opportunities because we grew up with the technology.
On another note, I believe it generation after me is not going to be so lucky. Between my sister being a second grade teacher and talking about behavioral problems with her students, and my nephew who is now 10 years old who grew up on a Game Boy, I feel the amount of children who cannot focus has significantly increased. They keep blaming it on ADD, which I was diagnosed with borderline ADD, but I feel that the third-generation that grew up constantly staring at a video game or computer screen to stay occupied have almost developed signs of ADD because of it.
My nephew for example has never been able to occupy himself for more than a few minutes unless he had some kind of computer or gaming device. My niece who is now seven years old, is able to easily occupy herself without any computer gaming devices. They grew up differently because my nephew was given all types of games as he grew up, but my niece was given other things like horseback riding and paint. So because of the way the third-generation has been raised in relation to gaming, I feel it may affect some of their future in the sense of being able to stay focused.
Close relatives that know my nephew would say he’s not what most people would call a normal 10-year-old boy. We feel his growth has been stunted due to the way he was raised in this new generation. We have even considered supplements in the future for him to help with this. My sister looked up human growth hormone pills for sale online that her pediatrician recommended for the future. At this time were not certain they will be needed, hopefully not.
